Through respect, we will become a strong community in a sustainable world
Driland Kolleg not only offers students a unique combination of different types of school, but also aims to be a positive example of a future-oriented educational institution. The work at our continuing education college is characterized by the idea that education and society's future are closely linked. We are committed to education for sustainable development (ESD). For us, learning means personal development which, in addition to the acquisition of knowledge and subject-related skills, also strives for a considerate approach to the environment and peaceful coexistence in a future worth living for all people. Our motto "Respect" combines ESD activities for more tolerance and diversity, fairness, health, Holocaust education, environmental and democratic commitment.
You can find our complete concept for a sustainable school of the future here.
1. tolerance and diversity
As a tolerant and open school, we have been a "School of Diversity" and "School without Racism - School with Courage" since 2022. Our commitment to non-discriminatory coexistence is reflected in everyday teaching as well as in various events that regularly deal with the topics of the two networks during the semester. These activities range from project days, exhibitions and workshops to lectures and panel discussions. A flash mob against right-wing ideas and violence is planned for spring 2024. Appreciating foreign cultures is part of our school's identity: events with the One World Network e.V. NRW and Holocaust memorial events.
2. fairness through fair trade and the economy for the common good
As a Fairtrade School, we are committed to ensuring that students run a kiosk with sustainable, including many fair trade, products on their own responsibility as a student company under supervision. The Gronau public library, for example, has purchased a Fair-o-mat, which is operated by the Fair-AG. The school is also working towards integrating the vision of the Economy for the Common Good into school life. The school has already set up a give-and-take cupboard and an initial training event on the topic has already taken place with committed students.

3. respect for your own health
Health is important to the school when it comes to the kiosk: sustainable fruit is offered at the kiosk and in the staff room, as well as dairy products from the organic dairy Söbbeke in Gronau. When selling drinks, care is taken to ensure that sustainable mineral water is the cheapest drink on sale. Events on World Aids Day (e.g. readings, specialist lectures) are an important part of the school's sex education work. The school also offers a yoga club. Since 2023, Driland Kolleg has been included in the state program "Education and Health".

4. reverence for nature
Together with the school authorities, a near-natural school garden has been created to provide a habitat for insects and native bird species in particular. A meadow orchard has also been used since 2023 to provide students and teachers with fresh fruit. Our environmental working group deals with the natural school environment. In addition, the kiosk prefers to offer drinks in reusable bottles and cooperates with companies that support social and ecological projects with their sales. The kiosk also stocks sustainable stationery from the regional producer Venceremos. Driland Kolleg presents graduates with sustainable farewell gifts and a tree certificate.
5. education for responsible citizenship
As part of our mission to educate students to become responsible citizens, we take part in the junior election for the European, federal and NRW state elections. We aim to offer a regular study trip to Berlin with a political and historical program. A critical exchange with representatives from politics, society and business should also be part of the program. Commemorative trips (e.g. Wewelsburg) and Holocaust memorial events strengthen basic historical education.
